13 Things To Do To Baby Proof Your House

When a newborn baby comes in our home, as a parent, we start worrying about its health and safety. Being a parent, this worry is quite normal. The normal, active, physically healthy child will occasionally have some cuts and bruises. The important factor is to keep your child from serious and preventable accidents and injuries. So there are so many things parents can do to prevent accidents at home by making their house childproof. Childproofing doesn’t mean moving breakables to higher shelves. It means locking, securing, relocating or removing anything that may pose a potential danger to a child. You should start this before your child starts learning to crawl because once the child becomes mobile, you are faced with an ever-increasing, intensely interested rapid activity. So, before starting to make your home childproof, do an inspection carefully in detail. Because young children are very tactile and oral; any object or substance must not only be touched but mouthed to be fully explored. In this guide, I am going to tell you what you can do to make your home childproof.

Firstly, install child-resistant locks on all the cabinets within the child’s reach. Always keep in mind, what is child resistant to most children may not be true for yours, so don’t assume that with the locks in place your child is safe.

Generally cleaning fluids and agents are placed in the lower storage of the kitchen. So, first remove all these from the lower storage. These are very common household items considered to be non-poisonous, if taken in a large quantity, they can prove fatal. These things include mouthwash, cosmetics, meat tenderizers and spices.

Always put a lock on all medications including ointment such as repellents. Also place the key out of the reach of children.

In the bathroom, install toilet lid locks and don’t leave your child alone in the bathtub even for a second.

Avoid using tablecloths.

Put covers over all electrical outlets and also install smoke alarms on all levels of your home. Place gates at the top as well as on te bottom of your staircase.

Lift blind and drapery cords out of the reach of children.

Always use specially designed door stops and knobs that prevent children from opening forbidden doors. Turn down your water heater thermostat to between 120 degrees and 125 degrees to prevent scalding of young skin.

Most of the houseplants are poisonous so check carefully and if any toxic plants are found then it’s better to remove that plant from your home. Don’t use plants which attract bees.

Remove or keep the lid tightly closed for 4 to 6 gallon buckets or pails; a child can fall into these sized buckets and drown in just a few inches of water.

Always place the number of nearest poison control center handy. Include with it your child’s weight, allergies and any special medical conditions so you won’t have to remember these when in a panic. It should always be available for a babysitter or a visiting relative.

Always keep a first-aid kit in your home. You must know what to do with its contents.

Always keep in mind that childproofing is not a 100% guarantee that your child will be safe from injury. The best thing about childproofing is that it mitigates the curiosity of a young child and may prevent accidents.
