How To Buy A Sunscreen For A Baby

At least a few minutes of direct sunshine a day was once crucial to healthy growth and development in childhood, for it was the only available source of vitamin D, needed for building strong bones. Today, infant’s formulas, all milk and many other dairy products are fortified with the vitamin, and it is also found in baby vitamin supplements. You need not sacrifice the future of your children’s skin to ensure them the required dose of vitamin D. To be certain your baby doesn’t suffer the consequences of too much sun, always use a good sunscreen. Before buying a sunscreen, something which you must kept in mind. I hope this guide will help you to select a good sunscreen.

High SPF – Sunscreen are labelled with a sun protection factor, or SPF, from 2 to 30. The higher the number, the greater the protection. An SPF of at least 15 is recommended for babies and children, though a 30 is best for those with fair or sensitive skin. Do not use training products on babies; they don’t protect at all.

Effectiveness – Look for a product that contains ingredients that screen out both the short ultraviolet (UVB) rays of the sun that burn and can cause cancer as well as the longer ultraviolet (UVA) rays that tan, can cause long-term skin damage, and enhance the carcinogenic effects of the UVB rays.

Safety – Some sunscreen ingredients are irritating to or cause allergic reactions in some people, particularly infants with tender skins. So test a product out with a 24 hour patch test before smearing it all over your baby. Apply a small amount of sunscreen to the inside of baby’s arms and cover with a band-aid. Remove the band-aid 24 hours later, and expose the area to fifteen minutes of sunlight while the rest of the body is protected by hat and clothing. If the test patch reddens or swells, try a different product.

Protection in the water – When your baby is going to be in the water, select a product that is waterproof which means it will retain its effectiveness or water resistant. Remember, even with a sunscreen, exposure to the sun should be limited.
