How To Do Self-Care After Birth

When a new baby is born the whole family member’s main consideration is new baby. It is good but you need to take care of yourself. If you have a nurse or nanny with you then it’s easy to take care of yourself but if you are alone it is difficult to manage. In this guide, I am going to give you some tips for caring of yourself after delivery.

Adequate rest is essential to recovery. Try to rest or sleep when the baby sleeps. Even if you feel well rested, you should take a daily nap. Go to bed early whenever possible, especially while you are waking up for night feedings. Your goal should be to get as much total sleep in a twenty-four hour period as you normally need to function well.

If your labor and birth were normal, it is a safe to begin postpartum exercises within a day or two. Do not however feel guilty if you cannot find the time or motivation for a few weeks.

Gauge your activity by how you feel. It is wise to establish priorities about working inside and outside the home, to follow your caregiver’s guidelines about activity and to take advantage of all offers of help.

Special care for perineum is suggested, especially if you had stitches for an episiotomy or tear. The basic goal of perineal care is to prevent infection, to relive pain, and to promote healing.

Do not use tampons before your postpartum check up. Do not douche.

Apply an ice pack to the perineum as soon as after the birth as possible to reduce pain and swelling.

After you urinate, clean yourself by pouring warm water over your perineum from the front toward your rectum.

Continue healthful eating as you did during pregnancy.
