How To Keep Your Toddler Busy While You Are Cooking

Toddlers love to follow their Moms throughout the house and they also interfere in the household chores, sometimes simply to attract attention. If left alone there is a risk of their going around and exploring all sorts of things in the house that can be dangerous. What then are you supposed to do with this little bundle of nerves? Getting them engaged in something and yet continuing with your daily chores is a task in itself. There are two solutions for this. Either there should be some third person in the house who will keep the baby engaged and with whom you can trust the kid. Secondly you can keep the kid with you in the kitchen- in this case either absorb his attention in some play or take his help in cooking..yes that's right, your toddler will love it too as long as it is not dangerous.

If the kitchen is spacious, you may try involving your little one with a playgym or play yard. Of course this solution is temporary and you will have to look out for some new temptation everyday. It could be drawing pictures, reading picture books, solving puzzles and so on. However even though they play, you will need to interact with them constantly as you cook or complete a chore.

You can also place the toddler in a high chair or in a fixed stroller. They can be kept busy by chatting with them or by playing a CD of baby songs or nursery rhymes and singing along with them. You can also keep the kid engaged by replacing the toy in his hand periodically, simply because when they get bored with a task, they start cribbing and can make you run around.

The other solution is keeping the toddler busy with you. Give them tasks such as arranging plastic bowls according to size or counting the spoons. Putting the spoons in their stand is fun too. If the kid is a girl, you may set up a pretend n' play kitchen for her and she will gladly cook simultaneously with you.

You may cook something like pudding with them where the job of stirring is assigned to the kid. Arranging the salad with them is also fun. However with all this help, do not forget to appreciate it especially in front of other family members, it makes them feel very important.

Toddlers also love to play with water. Give them a small stainless steel container that is handy and one or two steel glasses. Watch them spend their time pouring and splashing water. It is a mental exercise for them that they enjoy thoroughly. In the same way they can also help you with watering your plants and gardening.
