How To Prevent Accidents At Home

You can’t prevent all accidents, but many serious accidents can be avoided if you baby-proof your house. Better care is called for if you happen to have small children at home. You must understand that your home can be a reproduction ground for accidents that can happen to your child. Here, I am going to tell you few tips which if kept in mind and followed, can really reduce the chances of your child becoming a sufferer to accidents.

Always keep the bathroom locked – Keep all the buckets and tubs empty. Infants can fall into the water and suffer harm. If you need water on a regular basis, cover the buckets and tubs with tightly fitting lids.

Cover your baby wisely – Do not cover your baby up to the chin in feathery and hazy blankets. While sleeping, your baby may take the blanket over the head. This will increase the chances of suffocation.

Block small children from the kitchen – Do not allow small children to enter the kitchen when you are cooking. There is always the danger of spluttering oil, spilling something hot on the child or the child pulling a pot off the stove. Always turn vessel handles away from the front of the stove.

Sweat the small stuff – keep way coins, safety pins, beads and other small objects. Toddlers are given to put everything in their mouth and can easily swallow these objects, leading to harm. Keep plastic shopping bags out of the reach of small children, since kids can suffocate by putting them on their heads or chewing them.

Do not leave your child alone – Your child must not be left unattended on the balcony or near an un-grilled window. Also, do not allow the child to climb tables or chairs.

Always buy safe toys – Buy those toys that are safe and free from sharp edges. They should be big enough to prevent swallowing. Avoid buying metal toys with colourful designs, as these can cause lead poisoning if chewed or leaked.

Keep the heat off – Keep hot water and other hot liquids at a height, the greatest cause of burns in children from hot liquids. Every house should have a fire extinguisher to put off fires before they go out of control. Also, keep a first aid kit and the address and telephone numbers of the nearest hospital, doctor and fire brigade handy in case of emergency.

Safe dress code – do not dress a baby in full length dresses which come up to the fee they might trip and hurt themselves. Toddler should not wear ties or other jewellery around the neck, they can choke on these while playing.
