How To Prevent Prickly Heat From Affecting The Baby

If your baby has sweat soaked hair and a patch of red bumps, located behind your baby’s neck and underneath the collar, then this is called prickly heat. Because blocked or swollen glands produce these pimple-like bumps, prickly heat emerges wherever sweat becomes trapped. The most common area include skin folds, around the diaper area, behind the ears, the neck and the knees. Prickly heat is very common among infants. Especially, when temperature rise above eighty degrees F or when an infant sweats due to a fever. Most of the times, stinging and itching accompanies the rash too. There are simple ways to prevent prickly heat. In this guide, I am going to tell you how you candela with prickly heat of the baby.

At first, to prevent prickly heat, your baby’s skin should remain cool and dry. Firstly, check whether your baby is warm or not. A simple way to check is, place your hand between your baby’s shoulder blades. If the skin feels hot and moist then your baby is too warm. Dress your baby infant in light, loose fitting clothes. Cotton fabric is preferable because it allows your baby’s skin to breathe. If your baby wears non-disposable diapers then maintain a loose fit.

Give a daily bath to your baby. Use lukewarm water and avoid overusing soap. To avoid irritating your baby’s skin, use cleansers that are recommended for infants. Also, since hot, humid weather increases prickly heat, lower the humidity by air conditioning your baby’s environment.

If your baby feels restless or irritated due to a rash, a lukewarm oatmeal bath may provide some relief. Oatmeal soothes the skin and relieves itching. There are many oilated oatmeal bath products on the market. If you don’t have that then you can add dry oatmeal to your baby’s bath. You can also apply calamine lotion to towel dried skin which reduces itching too.

You can use a branded baby powder for soothing the prickly heat. A baby powder keeps the skin dry . But use it very carefully because if the baby inhales the powder then it can cause chemical pneumonia. To prevent inhalation, pour the powder while standing away from your baby. Always use a cotton swab to apply the powder to the baby’s skin.

If prickly heat appears near the diaper area then try using zinc oxide ointment. Just like sealant protects wood, zinc oxide protects by creating a barrier between skin and irritating substances like urine. Also, zinc oxide maintains dry skin.

Always avoid overusing lotions and creams on your baby’s skin. These products may contain petrolatum, which retains moisture. And your main idea is to maintain dry skin. Lotions and creams block sweat glands, which may slow down healing.

The room in which your baby sleeps should have ventilation. Ventilation allows fresh air to come into room. The baby bed should be clean and free from dust. The baby room should be kept cool throughout the night . Normal temperature should be maintained in the baby’s room.

Trim your baby’s nails on regular basis so that it won’t peel those rashes with those nails.

The food that you provide can help in reducing infants’ rashes on his body. Make him eat light food items and give him more liquid so that he doesn’t get dehydrated.

If your baby’s skin doesn’t improve within few days or if your baby experiences fever, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy etc along with the rash, then consult your baby’s doctor immediately.
