Tips For Posture And Movement During Pregnancy

Good posture and body mechanics, the safe and efficient performance of everyday tasks, are the cornerstones of a comfortable pregnancy. As you gain weight and your body changes shape, you must adjust your posture to maintain alignment and balance. By using the following guidelines, you can perform everyday activities with the least strain and effort can reduce fatigue and common aches and pains.

Posture - You can improve your posture by standing as tall as possible and by keeping your chin level. Imagine a string attached to the crown of your head, pulling it towards the ceiling. If you hold your head high, the rest of your body usually aligns itself properly.

Standing – when possible, avoid standing for long periods of time during late pregnancy. Standing may slow the return of blood from your legs to your heart and head, which can make you feel light-headed. Shift your weight from leg to leg, rotate your ankles in small circles and rock back and forth from your toes to your heels.

Sitting – during late pregnancy, try to avoid prolonged sitting since this also impair the return of blood from your legs. To improve the circulation in your legs while sitting, do not cross your legs at the knees for long periods and frequently move and rotate your feet at the ankles.

Lifting – joints and ligaments are softened and relaxed during pregnancy, so you are more likely to injure your back if you lift heavy objects. To lift or pick up an object, use your strong thigh muscles instead of short, weaker muscles of your lower back. Remember to bend at the knees when lifting, not at the waist.

Lying down – as your pregnancy progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to be comfortable while lying down. Pillows help, when you are lying on your side, put a pillow under your head so it is well supported.

Getting up – getting up from the floor or out of bed becomes more difficult as pregnancy advances. To get out of bed, roll onto your side, put your legs over the edge of the bed, then push yourself to a sitting position and stand up.
