Tips For Successful Feeding Sessions

Feeding a baby in the early weeksis not an effortless process, no matter what the source of milk. But whetherit’s a breast or bottle that will be your newborn’s ticket to full a tummy. Ihope, with the help of this guide, your trip of feeding will be smoother.

Minimize the disorder – You and your baby will both have to concentrate in these early feeding sessions and will fare better with as few distractions as possible. If visitors are banished at feeding times in the hospital, regard the rule a blessing since it will give you the quite time you need with your baby.

Make a change – If your baby is relatively calm, you have time for a change. A clean diaper will make for a more comfortable meal and reduce the need for a change. But don’t change during the night if it’s not necessary; such a disruption makes falling back to sleep more difficult.

Wash up – Even though you won’t be doing eating, it’s your hands that should be washed with soap and water before your baby’s meals. If you are breastfeeding, your nipples need not be washed before each feeding; a once a day soap less wash in the shower or tub is sufficient.

Be comfortable – Muscular aches and pains are occupational risk for new parents who use unfamiliar muscles to carry growing babies around. Feeding baby in an awkward position will only compound the problem. So, before putting baby to breast or bottle, be sure you are comfortable, with adequate support for your back and for the arm under baby.

Loosen up – If your baby is tightly swaddled, unwrap him so you can cuddle while you feed.

Cool down a screaming baby – A baby whose upset will have trouble getting down for feeding, and even more trouble with the digesting. Try a soothing song or a little rocking.

Sound reveille – Some babies are sleepy at meal times, a combined effort is required to wake up them to the task of nursing.

Make contact – Cuddle and caress your baby with your hands, your eyes and your voice. Remember, meals should not fill your baby’s daily requirements just for nutrients, but for mother love as well.

Break for a burp – Between breasts or a halfway through the bottle, routinely burp your baby. Also try burping if baby seems to want to stop eating prematurely, it may be gas, not food, that’s filling the little tummy.
